Abstract
A preparation fo completely hemolysed erythrocytes from the blood of domestic fowls, which actively incorporates alpha C14 glycine into heme, is descr. The effects of time and of glycine concn. on the rate of synthesis were studied. Stimulation of the synthesis up to 6-fold was obtained with some preparations of boiled yeast extract. The synthesis was inhibited by almost completely by 2:4-Dinitrophenol at 5 x 10-4 [image]. Synthesis of free protoporphyrin also occurs during incubation of the hemolysate. Contrary to the findings of Gajdos and Gajdos-Torok (1951), using the blood of phenylhydrazine-anemic rabbits, Na fluoride was found to inhibit free porphyrin synthesis both in hemolysates and in whole blood of fowls. The effects of various other substances, including some erythropoietic agents, are also descr.
