Abstract
Binding energies of electrons in several neutral atoms are calculated for the Thomas-Fermi, Fermi-Amaldi, and Thomas-Fermi-Dirac models, as well as for three other modified models proposed in this paper. In the modified models the self-interaction of the electrons is explicity treated. One of these modifications, related to the Fermi-Amaldi model, seems to yield results very close to the experimental values for binding energies above a few tens of eV in atoms with up to about 50.
