By considering simple examples from the viewpoint of both classical electromagnetism and the special theory of relativity, it is shown that the magnetic forces between moving charges are of order v2/c2 times the electric forces between the charges, where v is the velocity of the charges. The relevance of electric forces in the definition of the ampere is discussed.
