Agranulocytosis after Promazine Therapy

Abstract
RECENTLY a new phenothiazine derivative, promazine hydrochloride (10-[3-dimethylamino-n-propyl]-phenothiazine hydrochloride), has been introduced as an effective tranquilizing agent in the management of various acute mental disturbances. The pharmacologic properties of promazine (Sparine) were found to be similar to those of chlorpromazine (Thorazine)1; however, promazine appeared to be less toxic.2 , 3 It is believed that a report of a case of agranulocytosis after therapy with this drug will be of general interest. To our knowledge this toxic effect of promazine, with recovery, has not previously been reported.Case ReportA 46-year-old woman was admitted to the Medical-Surgical Building of Norristown State Hospital . . .
