Abstract
It is shown how the solution of the mean-field equations for the ANNNI model can be reduced to the iteration of an area-preserving two-dimensional mapping if an external magnetic field is applied. This method is analysed in detail and compared with the exact numerical solution of the mean-field equations for simple periodic magnetisations. Keywords
