Abstract
During winter, there are three marked maxima of wind speed centered at (150°E,30°N), (70°W,40°N), and (40°E,25°N) respectively. The present numerical analysis suggests that these wind maxima have some dynamical relation with the mountains, such as the Himalayas and the Rocky Mountains. In June, upper westerlies generally split into two branches over the western part of the Pacific. By an inspection of the computed flow patterns for June, we have an impression that the splitting of the jet streams over the Far East is mainly caused by the effect of the Himalayas.
