Abstract
Difficulties in culturing the bacterium Treponema pallidum have greatly hindered syphilis research. Recently, several laboratories have accomplished the expression of T. pallidum antigens in Escherichia coli. It is anticipated that treponemal antigens produced by recombinant DNA technology will provide new tools for investigating the pathogenesis and immunobiology of T. pallidum infection.Keywords
