Production of High-Energy Ions in Laser-Produced Plasmas

Abstract
Several reported experiments are analyzed to show that acceleration in transient electric fields is an unlikely means of production of the highly energetic ions observed in laser‐produced plasmas. Alternative mechanisms which appear capable of accounting for the observed results are proposed and discussed.Keywords
