Effect of Cortisone on Tissue Mast Cells in the Hamster Cheek Pouch.

Abstract
Counts were made of the no. of mast cells in unit areas of the cheek pouches of the hamster (Mesocricetus auratus), prepd. for study by excision and metachromatic straining of whole mounts with methylene blue. Subcut. injns. of cortisone acetate (5 mg./day for 12-23 days) produced a decrease in mast cells (avg., 195/sq. mm. after treatment in 12 hamsters) as compared with controls (avg., 538/ sq. mm. in 4 hamsters). Disrupted mast cells with extruded granules were found in the cheek pouches of cortisone-treated hamsters. The clotting time (Lee-White method) during treatment was at 1st less than in the controls, but later was extended in hamsters surviving 21 days.
