Abstract
A study was made of strains of the genus Lactobacillus that produce mannitol from levulose and appreciable amts. of CO2, alcohol and acetic acid as well as lactic acid from glucose. 4 spp. are recognized: L. brevis (Orla-Jensen) Bergey et al.; L. fermentum Beij.; L. buchneri (Henneberg) Bergey et al. emend. Pederson; and L. pastorianus (Van Laer) Bergey et al. A number of other previously named gas producing strains are considered to be identical with one or another of these spp. A 5th group will require further study before its relationship to the other spp. can be detd. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
