Abstract
Using a gradient-coupling model as an effective Lagrangian, the cross section for the emission of arbitrary numbers of soft neutral pions in high-energy scattering processes is obtained in the region , , as an infrared factor times the corresponding elastic cross section. A formula relating the average number of soft to their average total energy is derived, and the possibility is discussed of interpreting large-angle elastic scattering as the shadow of soft-pion emission.
