57—BASIC PEPTIDES FROM α-KERATOSE

Abstract
A tryptic hydrolysate of α-keratose from wool was divided into acidic, neutral and basic peptides by an ion-exchange resin column technique and high-voltage paper electrophoresis. The basic peptides were separated and tested for homogeneity by means of electrophoresis and chromatography. It was possible to isolate the free amino acids, arginine and lysine and also seven dipeptides of either arginine or lysine, two tripeptides, a pentapeptide and possibly a hexapeptide. The presumed sequences of seven dipeptides are given. One dipeptide could be identified as lysyllysine by comparison with the synthesized peptide.
