Fertility Level of Bull Semen Diluted at 1:400 with and without Sulfanilamide

Abstract
The practical level of dilution of bovine semen with yolk-citrate diluent was found to be about 1:100. With the addition of 300 mg. of sulfanilamide per 100 ml. of the yolk-citrate diluent, no statistically significant differences at the 5% level of probability were found between dilution rates of 1 part of semen to 100, 150, 200, 300 and 400 parts of the diluent. A slight downward trend amounting to 0.8% in fertility level with each decrease in 1 million spermatozoa inseminated was observed between the ranges of 2.36 to 15.3 millions of spermatozoa inseminated. For optimum fertility with the present diluents, handling procedures and inseminating techniques, the minimum number of spermatozoa required per insemination is probably between 5 and 10 millions.
