To the Editor: As a practicing pharmacist who is also a recovering addict, I must take exception to much of Dr. Newman's review of methadone treatment (Aug. 13 issue).* Methadone maintenance is not a treatment for heroin addiction; rather, it is merely a replacement of one addiction for another. In fact, the addiction to methadone is probably worse than the one it is supposed to ameliorate.Addiction is a physical, mental, and spiritual disease affecting every area of our lives; social acceptability does not equal recovery.
