Transtracheal aspiration is a simple and safe procedure which enables the recovery of lower respiratory tract secretions uncontaminated by those of the moutn and pharynx. It is of considerable value in the study of the bacteriology and cytology of the lower respiratory tract. The procedure may be used in both clinical and research medicine.
