Separation and determination of small amounts of tin

Abstract
A method is presented for the selective extraction of tin(IV) iodide from sulphuric acid solution into toluene. Tin(IV) is then returned to aqueous solution by shaking the toluene extract with dilute sodium hydroxide solution. The metal is finally determined by spectrophotometric measurement of the colour of the complex formed between tin(IV) and catechol violet. The method is quick, simple, sensitive and highly selective.
