Nature of spatial chaos

Abstract
We present the two basic mechanisms leading to spatial complexity in one-dimensional patterns. They are shown to be the counterparts of the horseshoe formation mechanisms studied by Melnikov and Shilnikov in dynamical systems theory.Keywords
