Atomic Resolution TEM Images of the Au(001) Reconstructed Surface

Abstract
Au(001) reconstructed surface is directly observed in the profile-imaging mode of the surface observation with use of an ultra-high vacuum high resolution 1 MV electron microscope. Au particles are deposited in-situ in the microscope and clean (001) surfaces are observed along the [110] direction. In the image, six atomic rows in the top Au layer form a corrugation so as to fit five atomic rows in the underlying (001) atomic plane of the fcc lattice. The corrugation is due to the reconstruction along the 5 times superperiod direction of the Au(001)5×28 structure. The height of the corrugation is about 0.03–0.11 nm in agreement with recent scanning tunneling microscope study of the Au(001) surfaces.
