17 gannets were released in territory unknown to them and their homeward flight followed with an airplane. Their flight paths radiated in many directions from the release point, with a suggestion of spiraling. The paths suggest exploration rather than any absolute sense of direction. It is probable that the homing ability of other wild birds is based largely on exploration for visual landmarks.
