Deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan processes

Abstract
With minimal assumptions, the valence- and sea-quark distributions of the nucleon are extracted from deep inelastic scattering and heavy-lepton-pair production data for mod q2 mod =m2>20 GeV2. The results are extended to lower mod q2 mod taking account of scale breaking effects, and applied to J/ Psi production in nucleon-nucleon collisions. It is shown that a consistent picture can be obtained in the quark fusion model. On this basis, the argument is extended to J/ Psi production in pion-nucleon collisions, and the valence- and sea-quark distributions of the pion obtained from the data. The results for the valence- and sea-quark distributions of the nucleon are shown to be compatible with the QCD formalism.
