A General Evolutionary Principle Underlying the Origin of Developmental Homeostasis

Abstract

The relation of the stability or variability of characters to their adaptive functions in plants is studied. In higher organisms formative and selective factors rarely coincide. This lack of coincidence between formative and selective factors is responsible for the reinforcement of internal factors of development. The environmental factors gradually lose their influence, and developmental homeostasis arises.
