A Simplified Method for Bactericidal Assay of Natural Antibodies Against Gram-negative Bacteria

Abstract
Summary A bactericidal assay for antibodies against smooth strains of enterobacteria has been described which differs from earlier versions in several aspects. Precolostral calf serum was utilized as a “natural”source of complement lacking certain antibodies. The inoculum size was reduced to 102 cells. Expedient and more direct means were devised for determining the results of the interaction of complement test serum (antibodies) and bacteria. These changes made possible a great economy of effort without sacrifice of sensitivity and precision.
