Abstract
Measurements were made of the uptake of glucose by leucocytes obtained from normal and diabetic subjects, on incubation in plasma and in synthetic media, with and without insulin. Cells of diabetics in bicarbonate medium showed an uptake of glucose which was lower than that of cells from non-diabetics. In plasma and bicarbonate medium they showed a decreased response to insulin. These results are compatible with prior findings of decreased glucose utilization and decreased insulin responsiveness in human diabetes of the maturity-onset type.
