Abstract
An exothermic reaction, proceeding in a reaction mass, may give an explosion or thermal equilibria depending upon the magnitude of the number δ. Frank‐Kamenetsky's original criterion for thermal explosion is δ>3.32. Extended calculations have shown that a more detailed consideration of the situation is possible. In a spherical reaction mass, thermal explosion may be induced by a foreign heat source when δ>1.66.
