Comparative studies of tidal rhythms. III. Spontaneous splitting of the peaks of crab locomotory rhythms

Abstract
The activity rhythms of 57 crabs—representing two species—were studied individually in constant conditions, in some cases for up to 5 months. This paper describes the splitting of individual activity peaks, a new property. The fragments thus formed each display their own periods, and, in time, often fuse again with each other or with the other tidal peak. This new finding is used as the basis for postulating that more than one clock must control each tidal peak.
