Three types of sandy beach surface features, which resemble one another in their rhomboid ground plan but have different origins, can be recognized: rhomboid rills, superimposed current ripples of rhomboid pattern, and rhomboid ripple marks-linguoid ripples, all formed by unidirectional swash or backwash currents.
