Abstract
An objective method for simultaneous electrical recording of the calorically induced cristo-ocular (nystagmus) and cristo-spinal (laterotorsion) reflexes is presented. Pneumatic balloons inserted beneath both sides of the occiput of supine patients will record any movement of the head and neck as measurable pressure difference between the air cushions. After calibration the pressure difference can be expressed in grams and thus standardized. The obtained recordings indicated an independence between these two reflexes despite a common stimulus. Since records adding information about laterotorsion to nystagmus may supply a further tool in the analysis of balance, detailed statistical studies of normal individuals and patients with known diagnoses will be presented in companion papers. Keywords
