Abstract
The theoretical minimum channel capacity required to transmit a given source at a given average distortion level is discussed. The limitations and applications of the theory are reviewed with particular emphasis on the use of the results for guiding practical system design and for bounding system performance. Applications are oriented toward video sources. Keywords
