Abstract
ONE OF the more strikingly consistent findings in the epidemiology of depression is the greater prevalence of both depressive symptoms and diagnosable major depression in females compared with males.1-6 Whereas the rates of depression are reported to be approximately the same in boys and girls before adolescence7-9 or even slightly elevated in prepubescent boys,10-12 by midadolescence the predominance of depression among women is well established,13-17—a trend that continues through young adulthood into middle age.18,19
