SEROLOGICAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN DIPLOCOCCUS PNEUMONIAE AND HEMOPHILUS INFLUENZAE

Abstract
An interesting serological relationship between certain pneumococci and H. influenzae has been demonstrated by means of "Quellung" reactions using rabbit sera. The present evidence is that there is a common carbohydrate component shared by pneumococcus Type 6b and H. influenzae Type a. Certain rabbit antipneumococcus Type 21 sera will produce definite "Quellung" reactions with H. influenzae Type c. The reaction between pneumococcus Type 6b and H influenzae Type a is reciprocal. No statement can be made concerning the reciprocity of the reaction between pneumococcus Type 21 and H. influenzae Type c.
