Abstract
Comparison of the lipoprotein patterns in patients with various types of ischemic heart disease revealed that only the pre-beta lipid differed, being greater in cases of acute coronary insufficiency and abnormally decreased within 24 hours of an acute infarction. Studies of the effects of heparin on lipoproteins showed hypermobility of the lipoproteins in 54% of the cases, reduction of the pre-beta lipid in 36% and no change in 10%. The similarity of the lipoprotein pattern in some cases of acute infarction of that found after systemic heparin suggested that prolonged heparin therapy might be of value; and, in 4 patients in whom this was tried, redistribution of the pre-beta lipid between the beta- and alpha-fractions occurred.
