Abstract
A,B''-Indolepropionic acid is highly active in Went''s Avena test. An asymmetric C-atom is present in the compound, and therefore 2 antipodes exist. The racemic acid was prepared (detailed methods are given). In the Avena test, the racemic, (+)- and ([long dash])-[alpha],[beta]''-indolepropionic acids, contain, respectively, 23, 48 and 1.6 billion activity units per g. However, this difference in activity seems to be due to the difference in the ease with which the antipodes are transported in the plant, for they have equal activity when they can act directly on the cells in the growth zone.
