Abstract
A deterministic cellular automaton model is presented to simulate the traffic flow in a two-lane roadway. The model is an extended version of the one-dimensional asymmetric exclusion model to take into account the exchange of cars between the first and the second lanes. Using computer simulation, it is shown that the exchange of cars has an important effect on phase transition between the maximal velocity phase and the high-density phase. The phase diagram of the phase transition is found. Also, a simple mean-field theory is presented to analyse the traffic flow of a two-lane roadway.
