BASAL METABOLISM OF NORMAL BOYS AND GIRLS FROM TWO TO TWELVE YEARS OLD, INCLUSIVE

Abstract
As a report of progress of the basal metabolism project of the Child Research Council, Lewis, Kinsman and Iliff1 published in 1937 the results of 637 determinations of basal metabolism on 93 normal children from 2 to 12 years old, inclusive. It was suggested at that time that final conclusions concerning standards for the basal metabolism of children of these ages could be drawn only when additional data were obtained and were shown not to differ significantly from the values then being reported. Since that time further study of children in this same age range has resulted in 946 new determinations on 102 children. It is the purpose of this paper to report the mean values for these new data and to compare them with the values previously published from this laboratory.1 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND SUBJECTS The experimental procedure has been essentially that previously reported in detail by
