Abstract
Ethylenediamine-tetraacetate (EDTA) inhibited peroxide formation in rat liver homogenates and in rat liver mitochondria exposed to UV radiation, as measured by the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) test. EDTA protected mitochondrial succinoxidase activity from UV inactivation and the protection was proportional to the inhibition of peroxide formation. EDTA had no effect on peroxide formation in pure methyl linolenate emulsions exposed to UV radiation, but did prevent the antioxidant effect of ascorbic acid and the iron catalysis of peroxide formation in emulsions similarly exposed. The possible role of peroxides as mediators of the UV inactivation of succinoxidase was discussed.
