Abstract
An anistropic EPR spectrum of Ag2+ ions has been observed at 4.2 °K in single crystals of CaF2 and SrF2 that have been doped with silver. X rays convert the silver from the Ag1+ to the Ag2+ state. The results may be fitted with spin Hamiltonians with S=12, g=1.997±0.001 and g=2.106±0.001 for CaF2, and g=1.988±0.001 and g=2.130±0.001 for SrF2. Hyperfine interactions with the silver nucleus are not resolved, but are expected to be small from symmetry considerations. Hyperfine interactions with two equivalent fluorines are observed and have the characteristic 1: 2: 1 intensity ratio with A=58.6×104 cm1 and A=14.5×104 cm1 for CaF2:Ag2+, and A=30.6×104 cm1 and A=14.6×104 cm1 for SrF2:Ag2+. Additional hyperfine structure from four other fluorine nuclei can be resolved when the magnetic field is along a 110 direction. Optical absorption bands are observed in the x-rayed CaF2:
