The DNase of the Rat Parotid Gland

Abstract
An active DNase is described in homogenates of the parotid gland and in the parotid saliva of the rat. DNase activity is greatest in the zymogen granule fraction of the gland. Its optimal pH is ca. 6.3. Paper electrophoresis of parotid saliva revealed three distinct peaks. Resolution of the anionic components yielded gamma-amylase and gamma globulin; the DNase was cationic. It is suggested that the parotid DNase acts as a digestive enzyme concurrent with the amylase secreted by the gland.
