Abstract
The dried, ground spleen was extracted with petroleum ether, ether, alcohol, and a chloroform-methyl alcohol mixture, after which the kerasin was precipitated with acetone. This was identified by its hydrolytic products (galac-tose, sphingosine and lignoceric acid). A 2nd substance which gave a red-violet color with orcinol and FeCl3, and contained a reducing sugar corresponding to 22.4% galactose, was also isolated. This latter product is also known to occur in the brain.
