Abstract
Analysis of single-crystal reflectivity data of spinel MgAl2O4 shows that a six-oscillator least-square fit reproduces the reflectivity data well. The transverse optic frequencies are found to be 306, 363, 491, 581, 674, and 812 cm-1 whereas the corresponding longitudinal optic frequencies are 310, 365, 580, 609, 806 and 864 cm-1. This would tend to support the suggestion by Grimes (1972) that some members of the spinel family belong to space group F43m as opposed to Fd3m.Keywords
