Abstract
Histochemical studies of protein, peptidase, and proteinase contents indicate that of the 3 spp. of freshwater amebae,I. Ameba proteus Leidy (Chaos diffluens). II. Chaos chaos Schaeffer (Pelomyxa carolinensis, A. carolinen-sis. C. carolinensis), and IE. Pelomyxa palustris Greeff, I and II should be placed in the same genus, III in a different genus. The ratio of peptidase activity in II to peptidase activity in I is 1.2, the corresponding ratio for proteinase activity is 0.65; similar ratios between II and III have values of 200 and 112, respectively. Keywords
