Abstract
The genus is divided into four subgenera, Racemella, Cordyceps, Cryptocordyceps subgen. nov. and Ophiocordyceps. The subgenus Cordyceps is divided into four sections, Hemicordyceps, Cordyceps, Cremastocarpon, and Cystocordyceps and the section Cremastocarpon into Mycogenae and Entomogenae. Forty-one spp. are treated, C. thaxteri and C. grenadensis on Arachnida; C. amazonica and C. monticola on Orthoptera; C. clavulata, C. sobolifera and C. hesleri on Homoptera; C. acicularis, C. superficialis, C. michiganensis, C. subsessilis, C. martialis, C. macularis, C. melolonthae, C. salebrosa, C. curculionum, C. variabilis, C. entomorrhiza, C. gracilis, C. stylophora, C. ravenelii and C. peltata on Coleoptera; C. paludosa, C. crinalis, C. tuberculata, C. militaris, C. washingtonensis, C. elongata, C. polyarthra, C. belizensis and C. gracilis on Lepidoptera; C. dipterigena on Diptera; C. langloisii, C. lloydii, C. sphecocephala, C. myrmecophila, C. unilateralis and C. smithii on Hymenoptera; C. olivascens, C. caloceroides, C. armeniaca and C. insignis on undetermined hosts. C. rickii is made a variety of C. melolonthae.
