Abstract
Compound optical cavities have the ability to support two overlapping modes simultaneously. In optically pumped FIR laser applications, one of these modes is used for the pump laser, while the other supports the oscillations of the FIR laser. Design features and mode volume calculations in such systems are presented, and one practical example is considered in detail. Keywords
