SULFUR METABOLISM IN HIGHER PLANTS

Abstract
In-corporation of S35-sulfate in the S-containing organic compounds (cystine, methionine, etc.) of the primary leaves of excised mung bean during 7-10 days incubation is inhibited by the simultaneous presence of sulfite. S35-Sulfite is more rapidly incorporated than s35-sulfate. S35-Sulfate is readily converted to S35-sulfite, but not vice versa. An unknown intermediate(X) is proposed as shown in the following metabolic scheme: Sulfate[image] the organic S compounds Sulfite.
