Abstract
The heats of vaporization of the rare gases, diatomic, and polyatomic molecules were calculated from the isothermal reversible work required to compress a fluid of rigid spheres from the volume it occupies at a pressure of one atmosphere to the volume of the corresponding liquid. Similarly the heats of fusion of the rare gases were calculated from the additional work necessary to compress the rigid‐sphere fluid from the volume of the liquid to that of the solid. Agreement between the calculated and observed values was, with few exceptions, very good. Keywords
