Heart valve changes common to man and dog: a comparative study

Abstract
Nodular thickening, lipoid deposition, and mucoid degeneration of fibrosa occur in human and canine mitral valves. In both species the two former result from normal haemodynamic stimuli and are rarely of clinical significance. Mucoid degeneration ('ballooning') produces mitral incompetence; present data suggest that genetic factors and ageing are concerned in its pathogenesis.
