Red Cell Survival in the Turtle

Abstract
Studies of the in vitro labeling of turtle erythrocytes (terrapene Carolina Carolina) with glycine -2-C14 showed that transport of glycine through the cell membrane was facilitated in a N atmosphere but incorporation of the methyl carbon was related to O2 consumption. Erythrocytes labeled in vivo retained their activity for a period of at least 11 months, suggesting that the life span is much longer than that of the homoiotherms.
