If natural selection be considered as operating on individuals only, then it is impossible to account for the sterile castes in social societies like those of the ants. Hence selection is considered to work also on colonies of individuals. In this paper it is suggested that selection must work also on the population within an area or colony. For this belief there is some factual support.
