Abstract
226 patients with carcinoma of the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses who were treated in our hospital during the period 1957–64 were classified with regard to the clinical stages and the modes of treatment, and the crude survival rates were reviewed. When treated with our routine combined method, three-year crude survival rates for Stages I—II and Stage III were 47% (17/36) and 29% (10/34), respectively. The former, when treated with radiation alone, showed a three-year crude survival rate of 38% (10/26). When Stage III was treated with radiation alone, the rate of 6% (3/50) was obtained and the rate was as poor as 7% (1/14) for Stage IV. The results suggest the rationality of our classification and our treatment method with the preoperative irradiation combined with the radical operation.
