Abstract
Sediments play a crucial role in water quality. On the one hand they remove pollutants from the water column whereas on the other hand pollutants accumulated in the sediments may provide the surface water (long after the source of pollution has ceased) with contaminants. An overview of the immobilization and remobilization processes affecting heavy metals and organic micro‐pollutants is given. Keywords
