Abstract
The total venous return was measured in dogs by interposition of a continuously recording reservoir system between the vena cavae and the right atrium. Intravenous injection of E. coli endotoxin was followed by a marked decrease in venous return which was related to the pooling of large quantities of blood in the liver and intestine. Early administration Metaraminol prevented further pooling and produced an increase in venous return. The mechanism by which shock is initially produced after injection of endotoxin into dogs was therefore counteracted. Keywords
